Nassau lawmakers late this afternoon passed a smoking ban for workplaces, including restaurants and bars, that would make the county the first in the state to implement such a restriction.

The controversial legislation passed by a vote of 10-to-8, along party lines. Republican Edward Mangano was not present due to a family emergency.

As expected, all 10 members of the county legislature's Democratic majority supported the proposal, which takes effect on March 1.

Another blow to personal property rights.

I personally know three proprietors of pubs that WILL go under because of this. I hope they sue.

Oh, and there's a poll that needs Freeping. Please follow the link.

Makes me want to go out to Belmont Park on Wednesday and light up a Churchill.

There's got to be a way around this law.

Look at Utah. THey have some pretty strict laws against alcohol. But the people found ways around it. Every night club in the state of utah is a "private club". You buy a 24 hour membership to the private club at the door before you enter.

Private property rights are that of the homeowner and business owner  -- not the government. Free association is an individual right.

It is all but hopeless to combat the politician and bureaucrat enemies directly using commonsense logic and rational thought. They have no desire to acquire or maintain a stand on honest principle.

They are, however, very much moved about by tyranny of the majority -- mob rule. That is why they must put great effort toward harnessing the mob's minds and hearts via an "ends justify the means" modus operandi. Almost all politicians and bureaucrats operate by it.

Two examples: they can never admit the reality that guns don't kill people -- people kill people. They can never admit the reality that drugs don't abuse people -- people abuse themselves. They all violate their oath of office to uphold the constitution. If and when they do appear to stand on honest principle it is usually by accident or convenience -- not out of intent.

Juxtaposition:

The working-class man has a plan. While his work contributes to his prosperity and benefits society, he wants more prosperity and knows that in order to gain more prosperity for himself he must increase his benefit to society. He is one of the somewhat rare men and women that create a business plan. His plan is to create jobs, for he can't do all the work of the business himself.

His business plan when put into action will create jobs which will increase his employees' prosperity and with all those workers injecting more benefits into the marketplace it enables a more prosperous society.

BUT, there's a problem. Despite the man's honorable business plan that strives to gain more for himself and inject more benefits into society, government -- politicians and bureaucrats -- insist that the man use the government's plan.

The government's plan is overlaid on the businessman's plan and forces regulations, taxes and fees on the businessman's business plan. The government's overlay plan diminishes the businessman's goal of creating more jobs and injecting more values into society for which he is rightfully compensated with increased prosperity for himself.

Politicians and bureaucrats literally become parasites surviving off those that create prosperity and well-being for themselves, others and society. Working-class citizens -- from high-risk entrepreneurs to laborers to scientists to farmers -- literally become the host for government parasites.

The mob is growing increasingly restless and the politicians and bureaucrats magician-like illusions -- aided by a complicit media and academics -- are fast being cast aside by the light of fully integrated honesty.

In fact, I did notice the straight party line vote, and to tell you the truth, I was surprised.

You see, I live in the county next door here on Long Island (Suffolk County, to be exact), and tomorrow, our legislators will be having a "public meeting" to discuss this very same issue. Of course, the "public meeting" is only a formality, as the issue has effectively been decided already, but what's really disturbing is that unlike Nassau County and New York City, Suffolk County has a Republican majority. Unfortunately, none of them seem to know what a Republican IS, and vote just like Dems most of the time.

Only seven more years, only seven more years, only seven more years (If I say it often enough, perhaps it will come sooner)...

Regards,

I don't think the private club thing is going to fly if the establishment has any employees.

It's the same stunt they pulled in California: It doesn't matter at all whether you are a private club or not -- if you have employees, you're out of luck.

I do hope they give it a try, though. I'll buy a membership or two.

OH, I think a person could figure out a way, if givin the time and determination and plenty of lawyer freinds, to get around that law.

Here's an Idea that plain ol' little ol' me just thought of.

make the employees "special" members that are on a special board or something. They would be compensated for being on the "board".....and of course, board members would all be donating their time 40 hours a week to "help clean up" and make things more comfortable for the other "members".
